Listed below are important things that you have to do for you to maintain having healthy eyes, having the clearest vision, and ensuring that you’re seeing your best. Keep on reading below to know more:

Wear sunglasses

Not only your eyes can get damaged when exposed to the sun, but you can also have a greater risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. That’s why it’s important to protect your eyes as much as possible. You can do so by wearing sunglasses that block out 99-100 percent of both UV-B and UV-A radiation.

Eat a balanced and healthy diet

Your diet must consist of a lot of vegetables and fruits, particularly green and yellow leafy vegetables. You can also help your eyes by eating fish that contains a high level of omega-3 fatty acids like halibut, tuna, and salmon.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking can boost your risk of having age-related eye illnesses, like cataracts and macular degeneration, which damages the optic nerve.

Know your other risk factors

Did you know that you’re at greater risk of having age-related eye conditions and diseases as you get older? Because of that, it’s essential for you to determine your risk factors since you might be able to lower your chances of developing them sooner and lower your risk if you change some behaviors early.

Exercise regularly

Exercising can help in controlling or even preventing high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and control diabetes. Such diseases can result in some vision or eye issues. Hence, if you get regular exercise, you’ll get lesser chances of having such vision and eye problems.

Keep up a healthy weight

Having obese or being overweight can boost your chances of developing diabetes. If you have diabetes, you’ll be at greater risk of having glaucoma or retinopathy.

Wear protective eyewear

You need eye protection as you do things such as doing projects or repairs in your home, working in jobs like construction and factory work, or even playing particular sports. This is a must to prevent eye injuries in the future.

Know the medical history of your family

There are inherited eye diseases. Thus, it’s vital for you to know if anyone in your family members has had them. Knowing this is crucial to know whether you’re at greater risk of having an eye disease sooner or later.

Allow your eyes to rest

If you tend to spend most of your time using your laptop or PC, you could forget to blink your eyes and cause them to be tired. To minimize eye strain, try to apply the 20-20-20 rule: You have to look away approximately 20 ft. in front of you for 20 sec. every 20 min.

Get eye exams and tests

Everyone should get their eyesight tested to know if they have eye and vision conditions. Usually, kids have vision screening at their health care provider’s office, during a checkup with the kids eye doctor Houston, or in school, which is a great practice that must be done at least annually. Also, remember that a lot of adults require a comprehensive dilated exam than just a vision screening.
